Small business UPDATE - Our immediate family was laid off from casinos in Las Vegas, but we're keeping strong by moving them to Seattle :) Along with Cure Cocktail, we're launching Remedium Island Grill on Uber Eats! Hawaiian & Filipino BBQ in the PNW that you can get free delivery <3

TLDR: We're the family behind Cure Cocktail who made the news delivering cocktails. We recently had our immediate family laid off from their casino jobs in Las Vegas. So today we are launching - Hawaiian and Filipino BBQ to go on Uber Eats with Remedium Island Grill. If you are able to support us and enjoy BBQ, Burgers and more, we hope you enjoy our expansion of our family's food offerings.
UPDATE and why we're founding Remedium Island Grill our sister restaurant. Since March 15th and Inslee's bar closure mandate - to the scattered phases, tear gas at Cal Anderson, the creation of CHOP and more, we've been pulling through as a family and small business as best we can. We still host virtual zoom happy hours and bartending classes, and deliver charcuterie, cocktails and wine to the safety of your home!
In Las Vegas, where we were originally from, casinos were also shutdown due to the virus. Boyd Gaming and the Station Casinos immediately laid off staff, and also used the opportunity to replace all senior staff for those with lower wages. ie - our parents.
Two big factors - Our parents are only a few years away from retirement and Medicare, AND our lease at Cure Cocktail ends soon, and we always wanted a spot with a full service kitchen. For those who've been to our small bar - we've never had a full kitchen with stove and hood.
Remedium is an expansion of Cure - we thank you all for voting our bartender Joe as Seattle's favorite bartender - and now with mom and dad here we hope to serve you at the dinner table as well.
Remedium is about heritage. Authentic cuisines that we grew up with. Mom was born in Guam, raised in the Philippines, moved to Hawaii as dad was stationed there with the Navy. The Pacific Islands and it's BBQ flavors - comfort foods, unapologetic mixes with other cuisines - American (Hawaiian Burger), Japanese (Saimen/Ramen Noodles and Masubi), Chinese with Shanghai Lumpia, we know will be a great complement to the diverse tastes here in the PNW.
In the coming weeks we will slowly open with socially distanced in-dining on 15th and Pine. We'll start first with Uber Eats and food(charcuterie and now BBQ!) deliveries with our Cure Cocktail. Then we'll open our walk-in takeout window for you to experience our Steak, Chicken and shrimp kebabs. Hell we'll give you a literal pineapple with your meal!
We hope to serve you at our new bar, and serve you some great food. Then we can talk and reminisce about how much a roller coaster ride these months have been.
For now, join us on our Hawaiian Roller Coaster ride <3
Much love all! The Team at Cure and Remedium.

Are you ready to take a closer look at Spin Casino?

And it’s not just you — the name reminds us of another casino too — Spin Palace. The crazy thing is that it’s not just a coincidence. Spin Casino is owned and operated by the same company that owns and operates Spin Palace.
The name isn’t the only thing these two casinos have in common, though. They also have a similar, if not identical, casino. The games, graphics, and stakes are alike.
If playing at identical casinos isn’t your cup of tea, we totally understand. There are tons of unique places to play online. You can browse our review section and find dozens of them.
However, if this doesn’t bother you, then the upside is that you know that you can expect a high-quality and enjoyable experience at Spin Casino.
That said, we aren’t about to rest on our laurels just because Spin Casino is similar to its sister casinos. This is why we still reviewed Spin Casino with the same scrutiny we do when we review other casinos.
This means our review below includes both the good and the bad information that we found. It means we didn’t take money for a fluffy review or inflated rating. And it also means that we’re going to tell you exactly what you need to hear so that you can decide whether Spin Casino is the right site for you to join.
If that sounds like a review that you want to read, then we have good news for you — it starts in the next section

Spin Casino Basic Information

Spin Casino has a license with the Malta Gaming Authority and Kahnawake Gaming Commission. They’re licensed under the names Bayton Ltd and Baytree Ltd.
Bayton Ltd and Baytree Ltd are both managed by The Palace Group. There’s a good chance that you’ve heard of The Palace Group, or at least heard of or played at one of their brands. Some of the other brands they operate include Spin Palace, Ruby Fortune, and Mummy’s Gold.
The Palace Group has been in business a long time, too — since 2001. This means that they’re getting close to their 20th anniversary online, which is light years compared to other casinos.
Between their time in business and their gaming licenses, you can feel comfortable playing at any of their brands. This includes Spin Casino.

The Casino

In the following sections, we’re going to look at Spin Casino’s games. That way, you can get an idea of the games they offer so that you can decide if they’ll be a good fit for you.
Unlike most casinos nowadays, Spin Casino uses only Microgaming software for its animated casino games. There’s nothing wrong with this. It’s just that you won’t have the game or graphics variety that you will have at casinos that work with multiple software providers.
Trust us, though; this casino is plenty good enough. Spin Casino offers a little bit of everything here including slots, video poker, and table games.
They have a live dealer casino, too. Their live games come from Evolution and Ezugi, who are heavy hitters in the live gaming space. The result is a robust selection of live games. We’ll look at these later.
The one confusing aspect of their casino is that there are three sections — a casino, live casino, and Vegas (casino). We’re going to list some of their games below, but we’re only going to make a distinction between their animated and live dealer games.
We also noticed that their Vegas casino section doesn’t have any filters. You can’t select the type of games (slots, table games, video poker, etc.) that you want to see. This can make it tough to find the type of game you’re looking for unless you already know what it’s called.
The good news is that most, if not all, of their Vegas games, are also available in their main casino. This means there’s a chance you won’t need to visit the Vegas section at all.
Anyway, that covers the basics. Let’s now jump into each section and look at some specific examples of casino games you can play at Spin Casino.

Table Games

We’re going to start with Spin Casino’s table games. The following is a list of card and poker games that we found during our review.
  • Atlantic City Blackjack
  • Baccarat
  • Roulette
  • 3 Card Poker
  • Card Climber
  • Classic Blackjack
  • Craps
  • Double Exposure Blackjack
  • European Blackjack
  • European Roulette
  • Flip Card
  • High-Speed Poker
  • Hold’em High
  • Vegas Downtown Blackjack
  • Multi Wheel Roulette
  • Red Dog
  • Super Fun 21
  • Vegas Strip Blackjack
  • Spanish Blackjack
  • Triple Pocket Hold’em Poker
  • Cyberstud
  • And more!
There are both pluses and minuses to Spin Casino’s table game section. We’ll start with the downsides.
The most frustrating thing about their table games is that there’s no way to filter for specific games in the Vegas section. This can make it incredibly tough to find the games you want to play unless you already know what they’re called.
Another thing we were sort of unimpressed with is the lack of non-blackjack and roulette games. There are not enough games to offset all the blackjack and roulette options.
However, that brings us to one of the good things about their table game selection. They have lots of blackjack and roulette games.
In fact, you’ll find more than 30 blackjack games and more than 10 roulette games. Some of these are merely high-stakes variants or duplicate titles with improved graphics. Even discounting those, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better selection elsewhere.
Another thing we’re fans of is some of the unique games that you’ll find at Spin Casino that aren’t readily available elsewhere. For example, we can’t think of another casino that offers Triple Pocket Hold’em, Hold’em High, or Card Climber.
That’s always a good thing.
Table Game Testing, Graphics, and Stakes
Once we were done browsing their games, we opened a few of them up to make sure they worked well and to see what their graphics and stakes are like.
The graphics for the games we tested are pretty good. They’re not glossy, overly polished, or even realistic. They look more like animated games. There’s nothing wrong with that, though.
They don’t make it clear the stakes you can play for. We had to manually decrease and increase our bets to figure out the limits. The stakes we found varied from $2/hand or round to as much as $1,000. But keep in mind that this may vary depending on the game you play.
These aren’t bad limits — they’re higher than what many casinos offer. No t only that, but we also anticipated their live dealer casino offering even higher stakes. This means that we’re less concerned about how high the stakes are in this section of their casino.
We’ll look at their live dealer section in a few minutes.

Video Poker

The next section we checked out was Spin Casino’s video poker games. Here are the games we found during our review.
  • Aces & Eights Poker
  • Aces and Faces
  • All Aces Poker
  • Deuces Wild Poker
  • Deuces Wild Bonus Poker
  • Double Double Bonus Poker
  • Jacks or Better Poker
  • All American
  • Bonus Poker
  • Deuces & Joker Poker
  • Joker Poker
  • Louisiana Double Poker
  • Tens or Better Poker
This is an okay selection. On top of this, you’ll find “power,” “multi-hand,” and “Gold Series” variants that you can also choose from. We counted nearly 25 poker games in their main casino.
There are video poker machines in the Vegas section too, but we didn’t find anything different than what’s listed above.
Testing Their Games, Graphics, and Stakes
We tested a couple of their poker games during our review.
The games we played had average graphics, but that’s to be expected with video poker machines. They’re not meant to be fancy. They worked great, though. We experienced no lagging or bugs.
Some of them had neat features, too. For example, the machines we played offered the chance to double your winnings. When you make a winning hand, you can click the “double” button to play a mini-game to see if you can double up. Keep in mind that if you lose this game, you lose everything.
The best feature, though, had to be the automatic hold. Many video poker machines will tell you when you made a winning hand so that you don’t forget to hold those cards. However, one of the machines we played automatically held the best cards according to the common video poker strategy.
Now, we don’t know what strategy these machines are using or how optimal that strategy is. However, they did hold the cards we would have had this feature not existed. This is a neat option if you’re new to video poker and aren’t sure how to play optimally.
As far as stakes go, we found machines that let us play for as little as $0.25 per coin to as much as $50 per round. We recommend you bet the max number of coins, though, which means your minimum bet will be $1.25. This will vary from machine to machine, though.
Overall, we liked Spin Casino’s video poker section. We’d like to see more unique titles to choose from, but our opinion is that this lineup will work for most people reading this.

Next up is Spin Casino’s slot selection. They have far too many slot machines to list here, but here is a small sample to give you an idea of what you’ll be able to play.
  • 5 Reel Drive
  • Snow & Sable
  • Amazing Aztecs
  • Book of Oz
  • Cashville
  • Cash of Kingdoms
  • Diamond Empire
  • Dolphin Coast
  • Fruit vs Candy
  • Halloween
  • Girls with Guns
  • Game of Thrones
  • Highlander
  • Jurassic World
  • Lady in Red
  • Kings of Cash
  • Hitman
  • Lost Vegas
  • Lucky Koi
  • Oink Country Love
  • Pretty Kitty
  • Moby Dick
  • Monster Wheels
  • Robin of Sherwood
  • Silver Fang
  • So Much Sushi
  • The Great Albini
  • The Phantom of the Opera
  • Tomb Raider
  • Win Sum Dim Sum
  • Fat Lady Sings
  • Jekyll & Hyde
  • Jurassic Park
  • The Legend of Olympus
  • Throne of Egypt
  • Steam Punk Heroes
  • Winning Wizards
  • Untamed Bengal Tiger
  • Old King Cole
  • And more!
You’ll find all these slots in the main casino. There are plenty more where this comes from too. You’ll also find more slots — including unique titles not found in the main casino — inside the Vegas section.
That said, their selection of slots is much smaller than we expected considering that they work with Microgaming. We still can’t complain, though, especially after seeing some of the titles that you can play here.
For example, the slots that stood out to us are the licensed/branded slots. Licensed slots are machines that revolve around IP that other companies own. This includes movies (Jurassic Park), video games (Hitman), TV shows (Game of Thrones), and more.
These are fun to play because it’s highly likely that you’re going to be a fan of whatever the slot machine is about. For example, we like Jurassic Park. This means we get to kill two birds with one stone — play slots about a theme we really like.
Not only that, but you can play many of these slot machines in brick-and-mortar casinos. We’ve played Game of Thrones countless times during our trips to Las Vegas.
And this is just the licensed slots. You still have all the other slots that Spin Casino has to offer. This includes slots with bonus rounds, 3 and 5 reels, progressive jackpots, and features such as free spins, wilds, scatters, and more.
As for stakes, they vary so much that it’s hard to give concrete numbers. That said, we found machines that allowed us to play for as little as $0.10/spin to as much as $200. Most of the machines we looked at maxed out at $30 or less, though. This means that you might have to do some digging to find the machines with higher limits.
Overall, while Spin Casino’s slot section can definitely be bigger given that they’re powered by Microgaming, what they do have will be more than enough for most people.

Live Dealer Games

Last up is Spin Casino’s live dealer section. Here are the games we found during our review.
  • Dragon Tiger
  • Private Blackjack
  • Shangri La Roulette
  • Dream Catcher
  • Casino Hold’em
  • Baccarat
  • Football Studio
  • Roulette
  • Ultimate Texas Hold’em
  • Lightning Roulette
  • Infinite Blackjack
  • Baccarat Super 6
  • Evolution Party Table
This is a solid selection of live games, especially when compared to other online casinos. But that’s not a surprise since some of these games come from Evolution Gaming, who’s a heavy hitter in the live gaming space.
Once you click on one of these games, you’ll be redirected to a section where you’ll find several tables to choose from (depending on the game). You’ll also find a navigation bar at the top with several filters to help you quickly find the game you want to play.
The lowest stakes we found for these games is $5 for blackjack. This is sort of a bummer since some live blackjack games can be played for as little as $1. However, $5 is pretty standard for a live game, so it’s not something we can hold against them.
You can play some of their other games, like baccarat or roulette, for $0.10-$1 per round.
The highest stakes we found were $5,000 for blackjack, $2,000 for roulette, and as much as $5,000 for everything else. These aren’t th highest stakes online, but they should work for most people.
One of the most impressive things about their games is the camera work. The different angles they use and the close-ups make it look like you’re watching a movie. Depending on the game, you can also change the camera option. For example, the roulette game lets you choose from 3D, immersive, or classic camera angles
The streams were very good considering how good the camera work was. We noticed a few lags, but they didn’t take away from the game much. The resolution was pretty good regardless.
Other features include the option to chat with your tablemates and the dealer, adjust the sound and camera angles, bet behind, and set up automatic actions. You can even multi-table several games at once.
Overall, we’re impressed with the live dealer casino at Spin Casino. You’ll have plenty of games to choose from, stakes, features, and men and women dealers that speak different languages.
We recommend you check it out.

The Sportsbook

Spin Casino is unique from some of the other casinos under The Palace Group brand in that they also have a sportsbook. It’s called Spin Sports.
Here’s what you can expect to find if you choose to bet here.

Sports, Market, and Betting Options

Spin Sports has an excellent selection of sports that you can bet on. Here’s what we found during our review.
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Ice Hockey
  • American Football
  • Handball
  • Volleyball
  • Cricket
  • Rugby Union
  • Rugby League
  • Esports
  • Specials
  • Virtual Sports
  • Boxing
  • Gold
  • Badminton
  • Winter Sports
  • MMA
  • Darts
  • Snooker and Pool
  • Baseball
  • Cycling
  • Motor Racing
  • Speedway
  • Floorball
  • Table Tennis
  • Bandy
  • Aussie Rules
  • Surfing
  • Netball
  • Gaelic Football
  • Gaelic Hurling
  • Super Spin Specials
Many of these options have dropdown menus, too.
For example, click on the soccer option, and a dropdown menu containing options such as England, Europe, Spain, Italy, and Germany will appear. This goes for many of the other options, too — you’ll find countries as subcategories. You’ll need to click on these to find the different leagues that play in those countries.
Your betting options will obviously depend on the sport you bet on. We found plenty of choices, though. For example, you can bet outrights or money lines for Europa basketball. You’ll find spread betting, more money lines, oveunder, and outrights for NBA games.
Click on a match, and you’ll find additional markets. For example, we checked out an NBA game and found options to bet on different quarters, total points, team points per quarter or half, overtime, and more.
There are plenty of betting options here, which was a surprise, honestly, considering who’s running this sportsbook.

Live Betting

Spin Sports also offers live sports betting.
When we were there, you could bet on soccer, basketball, tennis, ice hockey, and cricket. We wouldn’t be surprised if they covered more matches than this (when those games are available).
In fact, we know that’s the case since we looked at their Event View and Live Schedule tabs. This is where you’ll see all the sports you can bet on, all the matches, and the number of betting opportunities available for each one.
And that’s about it for their live sportsbook. The one thing we’d really like to see added in the future is the option to watch live streams. It’d make sense to add a racebook too.
Here’s hoping that Spin Sports has both items on their to-do list.
>> Claim Free Spins Now <<

Final Thoughts

Spin Sports is a much better sportsbook than we expected. It’s hard to expect something this impressive from a company that has been running only casinos for more than a decade.
We’re fans, though. There are plenty of sports and markets to bet on. You also have your standard options for betting in American, fractional, or decimal odds, as well as using the sportsbook in different languages.
That said, there is room for improvement. They could add a racebook, live streaming, and additional features and build out their esports section.
But we think they’ve done a good job so far, and it’ll be more than enough for your typical casino player or recreational bettor.

Banking Options

Something we noticed during our review is that there’s the option to deposit inside both the casino and the sportsbook. As far as we can tell, it looks like you’ll want to deposit to the section you plan to spend your time in.
In other words, if you want to bet sports, you’ll want to deposit to your sportsbook account. If you want to play blackjack or slots, you’ll want to make your deposit to the casino.
The good news is that it looks like the same banking options are accepted in both sections. Find an option that works for you, and you can use it in both places.
When we reviewed Spin Casino, we didn’t find any evidence that suggests they charge fees on their deposits. This is great news. However, it’s not clear whether they charge fees on withdrawals.
As for limits, you can cash out as much as €4,000 per week if the amount you’re trying to cash out is more than 5x the amount that you’ve deposited over the life of your account. Otherwise, it looks like you can cash out as much as £10,000 in a 24-hour period.
This will depend on the banking option you use, of course.
Progressive jackpots are exempt from these rules, which is great to see. It’s no surprise, though, considering that they work with Microgaming.
That wraps up their banking details. The following two sections will list the banking methods you can use to fund and cash out your account.

  • Visa
  • Visa Electron
  • Mastercard
  • Maestro
  • Neteller
  • iDebit
  • Trustly
  • Skrill
  • Echeck
  • MuchBetter
  • Paysafecard
  • Instant Banking
  • Neosurf
  • ecoPayz
  • Flexepin
  • Direct Bank Transfer

  • Credit Card
  • Debit Card

  • Neteller
  • Skrill
  • Paysafecard
  • ecoCard

Bonus Promotions

You can claim a few promotions as a customer of Spin Casino and Spin Sports. The following sections summarize the offers you can claim and the terms you need to fulfill if you do.

Spin Casino Promotions

The following are offers that you’ll find under the promotions tab on the casino side of things.

New Player Bonus

This is an offer available to first-time customers. Spin Casino is offering a 100% match bonus of up to $1,000. It’s spread out over your first three deposits like this.
  • First Deposit – 100% match up to $400
  • Second Deposit – 100% match up to $300
  • Third Deposit – 100% match up to $300
This is a nice offer because you have multiple opportunities to claim as much as you can. It’s especially helpful for players on a budget who can’t deposit $1,000 in one shot.
You will need to roll over this bonus 50x, though the playthrough will depend on the casino game you play. We recommend reading their terms if you plan to play a game other than slots.
The downside to this offer is that if you do happen to complete the playthrough with money to spare, and you want to withdraw it, cash-outs will be limited to 100 casino credits. You’ll forfeit the rest of the bonus.
That being the case, it might make more sense to play the bonus (and lose money) until you only have 100 credits left. Then make a withdrawal if you want. That way, you can enjoy the bonus money/winnings for as long as possible.
And that’s all they have for bonus offers. Spin Casino does say that they offer bonuses on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. We have no idea what those offers look like, though.
While we were there, we did notice that they have a “bonus wheel.” You spin the wheel, and you can earn prizes, such as bonuses to claim. It looks like you can spin the wheel once every couple of hours.
This is pretty neat.

Loyalty Club

Spin Casino also offers a loyalty club. This is a multi-tier program that awards more perks the higher your status.
This program has six levels.
  • Blue
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Privé
As you ascend, you’ll receive additional perks such as bonus points, more entry points, exclusive tournaments, VIP support, phone support, and exclusive gifts and bonuses.
You can receive monthly bonuses too. Climb the ladder to the very top of their VIP program, and you can receive more than $10,000 every month in bonuses.
Getting to each tier is straightforward — you need to earn so many points to reach a specific status, and then so many points to maintain that status each month. You’ll earn 1 point for every $10 you spend in the casino.
We recommend you read their promotions page to determine for sure if this program will be a good fit for you. But if we understand their points setup and minimum point requirements correctly, then this looks like a good program to use — even for low-stakes players!

Spin Sports Promotions

You’ll need to be in the sportsbook section in order to find their sports betting promotions. The following are the promotions we found during our review, including what you can get and the terms you need to fulfill.
Free Bet – First-time sports bettors will be able to claim a free bet bonus. This is a 100% match up to $200. To claim the offer, deposit at least $10.
This offer has a 5x rollover ($1,000 if you claim the entire $200) before you can withdraw any winnings. We recommend you read their terms and conditions for their other rules, as you’ll need to abide by odd minimums/maximums when you make your bets.
And that’s the only offer we found for sports bettors during our review.
This isn’t a bad offer by any means. That said, it would be great if they had a few other promotions running. It’d be nice to see some kind of cashback or rebate offer or additional bonuses.
But as the saying goes, something is better than nothing.

Mobile Friendliness

Both Spin Casino and Spin Sports are mobile-friendly. You don’t need to download any apps. All you need to do is go to the casino or sportsbook from your phone or tablet and log in. You’ll be able to play all games and make bets from your browser.
It looks like you’ll have the full sportsbook at your disposal. And considering that they work with Microgaming and Evolution Gaming, we wouldn’t be surprised if most or even all of their casino games are available.

Customer Support

You can use the following options to contact Spin Casino.
The email address above is addressed to the parent company of Spin Casino. The issue with that is they manage several other casinos.
For that reason, we recommend that you make it clear that you’re a Spin Casino customer when you contact them. That way, you eliminate any confusion and reduce the chances of any unnecessary back and forth.
We were disappointed to see that they don’t offer phone support despite saying they do in multiple places throughout their website.
That said, phone support still isn’t a standard communication method offered by online gambling sites. It wouldn’t be fair if we held the lack of phone support against Spin Casino.
Besides, you can contact them 24/7 using the methods above. We sent Spin Casino an email, and we were surprised to receive a response less than two hours later. They answered our questions, too.
That’s better than the average casino for sure. For that reason, we give Spin Casino’s support two virtual thumbs up.

Great-aunt appears after death to give us a Filipino peso

My mother's mother was born and raised in the Philippines, and lived there until she was in her late 20s or 30s and moved to the US. She had a bunch of sisters too, and they all stayed behind in the Philippines, she was the only one to immigrate. One sister moved to the "big city" (Manila) and worked at a casino. It was just some average inoffensive job at a casino, I think she was a waitress or a bartender but my grandmother (very religious) was scandalized by this. She had a falling out with that sister because she thought her moving to Manila and working at a casino was awful and completely wrong. My mom has never been to the Philippines and as a result, never met her aunt. My grandmother still kept in touch with the rest of her sisters though, and one day when I was 10 she called my mom to let her know her aunt/my grandmother's sister had died.
We were in a rental house at that time because we had sold our old house and were in the process of moving to another country. My parents were still moving stuff from the old house to the rental, and didn't feel like cooking, so a few hours after my grandmother called us, we went to pick up Chinese takeout. We came back and my mom noticed there was a Filipino peso right there on the kitchen counter. She thought my dad or I got it somewhere and put it there, so she didn't think much of it and went on with her day. Later that day she mentioned it casually to my dad and he had no idea what she was talking about, so she asked me if I put it there, or if I had any idea what it was. I hadn't seen it, and hadn't put it there and told her so. My parents were kind of puzzled so they scoured through the house, looking for any other pesos or any other type of foreign currency.
There was literally nothing in the way of other currency to be found. My mother didn't keep pesos around ever, she'd never been to the Philippines (or Asia at all) and she had never met most of her aunts. We hadn't seen my grandmother irl for years at that point, and she didn't carry Filipino currency around with her anyway. Neither me nor my dad had even seen one irl at that point. I don't even know if my mom had. This was an EXTREMELY white area too, with no other Filipinos around at all, and the rental's owners were (unmarried) white brothers. There was literally no "logical" explanation for the peso, at all, and no hint of any other pesos in the house.
Part of the reason this may be relevant is that, like her aunt, my mom was always the "black sheep" of the family, running off/moving far away and being independent, not caring what her parents thought about her life choices. They were both very focused on being their own, strong woman and my mom loved hearing stories about her. I think her aunt is watching over her, like a guardian, and trying to send a message that she is OK.
Also, numerous people were confirmed to have died in the rental house so that may have had something to do with it but I don't think so. Apparently my parents had other paranormal experiences there but I didn't, or at least any that I can recall. It was a long time ago.

Depositing gambling winnings in a TFSA?

Here’s my background:
-male, 34 years old living in Canada since 2014 and PR since 2017-18
-born and brought up in Philippines
-while doing my bachelors in my home country, I used to play a lot of online pokeblackjack and won in the neighbourhood of high 5 figures (USD) but wasn’t sure if I could withdraw it there without problems because of gambling being a grey area
-moved to Canada in 2014 to do my masters that I finished in 2015
-also managed to withdraw above money to my Canadian bank accounts in small increments during this period
During my masters, I started playing live at casinos here and really fell in love with the lifestyle and the freedom to visit my home country every year for a few months to look after my ailing mother, to the extent I never bothered finding a 9 to 5 after getting my 3 year work permit (2015-2018).
However, I did work part-time for around 6 months in 2017 and got my PR in 2018. I also worked part time for around 5-6 months in 2019. With salary around $6-8k each in both years.
I also played a lot of poker and blackjack at the casino during all these years during which I made:
I started filing my taxes around 2018, and consulted with a few tax professionals, all of whom suggested that the above qualifies as casual gambling income (not conducted as a business), and to report only my part-time job income as per T4 slips. They did mention that it is a very grey area whether the activity is taken for the pursuit of profit or not and hence taxable or not, but the CRA would consider the amounts too small and the topic too controversial to litigate as taxing gambling profits could mean allowing gambling deductions for everyone. And at worst, I could be asked to pay taxes on these winnings in the future. Besides, I live a very basic life (no cahouse) and my only expenses are rent ($1k) and groceries. I also intend to find another job once COVID ends.
Over these years, I’ve never bothered to invest my money (that has been lying in a zero interest savings account) which I’ve realized has been a big mistake since I’ve seen my bank balance stay stagnant or trickle down. However, I still do have the high 5 figures (thanks to the money I won prior to moving to Canada) that I wish to start investing now, using something like Wealthsimple.
I came across something called TFSA and was advised to start with that (since my total contribution room accumulated over the years would be almost $50k) but since that is an account registered with the CRA, I’m not sure if it would be prudent to put a large sum of money into that?
Can the CRA come up to me and ask where I got the 50k from since it doesn’t reflect in my tax returns? I don’t have a problem even if that happened, but just curious if they indeed monitor TFSAs and match it with your income or not.
If so, should I consider investing in non-TFSA related funds?
Thank you for the suggestions in advance.

Jobs for 66 Year Old Dad who just moved to the US?

My 66 year old dad had worked for as a manager for a casino in the Philippines for almost 40 years and retired in 2018. We moved here in the United States 7 months ago, and until now, it’s been a struggle to find a job for him let alone get him interviewed.
I tried applying him for a nearby casino (there’s only one), Walmart, Target, Hope Depot, and so many more and had no luck. Also since he is old, he can’t adapt to computers and doesn’t fully understand them. He can speak English but just needs to build up his confidence.
He’s willing to do almost anything just to earn money.

[IWantOut] 20sF Philippines -> the Netherlands

Hello! Here are some introductory details:
• Graduated with a degree on advertising. • Currently an art director for about 9 months now. • Willingness scale to shift careers so I can leave my home country from 1 - 10, i'd say about 7. • With that in mind, current skills include graphic design, illustration, web design, art direction, and photography. Currently upskilling to UI/UX. • Travel history: been stamped twice for Schengen, currently have an eligible US visa, have been stamped a South Korean visa. Also a frequent-ish traveler, if that detail helps.
Why leave:
• Philippines is in its most terrible state since the 1970-1980 fascist rule. History is repeating itself. • Expedited by the COVID situation, we are now trillions in debt. The government is even now considering taxing apps like Netflix, Spotify, etc. to alleviate the growing debt. • Housing, especially in the capital city, is rapidly being taken over by under the table Chinese immigrants, even landlords are forcefully evicting current Filipino occupants because the immigrants offer double the rent pay. • Public facilities and cities are being sold to Chinese contractors. One of the provinces here are due to a "makeover" and turning it into a metropolitan & casino of the North. • Freedom of speech is being repressed surely and consistently day by day. Random arrests and killings. Elaborate lockdowns in place, with the military behaving dangerously similar to a dictatorship, in mask of calling it "quarantine".
Why Netherlands:
• I have a cousin there who is now a citizen and is working for a prominent shipping company. • From my travel to Holland, they give much respect to the arts/design to a point of giving a monthly stipend for artists back in the day but that is all I know.
Question proper: I would like to know how feasible it is to move there, particularly in terms of job prospects. Would furthering my studies there increase my chances too? And are universities/schools keen on design/art scholarships? The need to migrate is ever present & real but I am willing to stay home for a few years more should I need to build stronger credibility. Just as long as the end game will be living in the Netherlands (or should you suggest other amenable Schengen countries).
Thank you, and I hope you're all still faring well.

New Family Picture - No insurance - advice

Recently my mother-in-law moved in with my wife and I from the Philippines. We just recently had a baby. My mother-in-law has always been described as stubborn, tempremental, hard-headed, etc. Never diagnosed with any mental health issue. She held a job and retired from a casino job, and raised 3 daughters with hired help in PH.
After living with her continously for a month now I have started noticing things aren't registering as normal learning behavior. She has trouble learning a new task as simple as crossing a busy street with an automated crosswalk, or operating our gas oven. She is a green card holder in the U.S. and doesn't qualify to be added to our insurance. And as of now is not working. What resources could help us with diagnosing/planning on life going forward? My concern is growing now that she will most likely be left with our baby from time to time.
Thanks for any advice

Forwarded from my titos in the PNP

Duterte is a cunt.
Forwarded from my tito buddy... heart breaking
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
Just got off the phone with my classmates still in the PNP and they told me to relay the message that they are sorely lacking in protection from being infected with the coronavirus.
One PNP official had already died and only after his death did a test kit been done to determine if he had COVID19. But despite that they have no gripes or problems being in the frontlines.
People may say this isn’t a military/police issue but a health issue but ask them if they would want to lead the way and they’ll all say they fear for their own lives or they don’t care at all.
So who will do it? Renato Reyes? Teddy the Inutil Casino?
These students who would rather not get an education but would rally to their heart’s content?
These selfish rich people who think only of themselves and hide elsewhere far from risk?
This VP who knows nothing and brings nothing but criticism and hate because that’s all she offers?
These soldiers and policemen are risking their very own lives and that of their families to protect yours, theirs and everyone else, with no exceptions and no excuses. They are there on their own volition but under orders to do what they have to do.
If there is but one person to say we don’t need the military or police because we are patriots ourselves and we know what to do and we love our country so much that we will die for it then please come forward and do their job so they may also go home and be with their families.
At this moment in time, when stupid, irresponsible people take it upon themselves to condemn and criticize and pillory what our soldiers and policemen do for their own personal agenda, then the fight to contain any threat to our lives and to this nation become naught and we all lose as a nation in the end.

"No can really be safe nowadays..." - Senator Trillanes AMA for the lazy.

He's one of us. Human, after all.

Ligther side

redkinoko: On a lighter note, are hotels are still wary of you every time you book a room, after the whole Manila Pen thing?
TrillanesSonny: Haha. Hindi naman. Good client naman din kame since then : )
sadgaygirl: What are your dreams for your children?
TrillanesSonny: As a parent, I just want them to be kind and generous adults later on. As to their career path and love life, I just let them choose freely and then support their decision. I advise them from time to time when they ask for it.
Miamiheatfan4life: Senator pano po ba manligaw ng babae ?
TrillanesSonny: Pasensiya na, nakalimutan ko na. Its been a while. hehe.
LebronToWarriors: Senator what are your tips for a job interview ?
TrillanesSonny: Try not to be cocky and a know-it-all. A little humility can go a long way. It also helps if you dress up neatly.
tangina_nyo: Hello Senator, paano po magkaroon ng balls of steel na katulad ng sayo?
Sagot: maging fatalist ka.
silversoul: Hi, Senator. Taking this time to thank you for standing up for ideals and beliefs even if it means being in the minority.
So, my question is...Who is your favorite superhero?
TrillanesSonny: Thank you for your support. :) As to my favorite superhero, growing up, when I was still in grade school, I had a collection of Marvel comics of The Thing. Now, si Captain America kasi medyo hawig? Joke lang. Hehe!
On being pressed to answer kung sino ang pinaka cringe inducing politician, and divulge tidbits about these pols.
TrillanesSonny: Pwedeng pass muna ulit? Hehe. Sa meet-up na lang.
Good afternoon Senator, is your mother strict when it comes to drinking your milk when you were still young?
TrillanesSonny: Not really. But I was the one craving for it. Particularly, fresh milk.
mocha_utong: Senator, paano po ba mag move on pag may mahal na siyang iba?
TrillanesSonny: Inom ng konti tapos ligaw na ulet. hehe. =)

The big issues

1. What the opposition is doing and why they failed in getting their message across to the people.
I totally agree with your assessment that the opposition has met serious challenges in delivering its message to the people. There are some factors that caused this. One, duterte came in as one of the most popular presidents in history hence, early on the message of the opposition has been met with doubt and resistance by his popular base. Two, the propaganda machine of duterte is very effective. Three, culturally, the Filipino people are very patient and resilient that's why they don't tend to complain and rather just grin and bear it. But having said this, after two years, the political landscape has change drastically and I can honestly say that the majority of the Filipino people have seen the light. Mas nakaka penetrate na ngayon ang mga mensahe ng oposisyon.
Unknown to the public, the Opposition has consolidated and united its ranks the past few months. This new united opposition is led by Vice President Leni Robredo. We are also busy preparing for contingency scenarios like the declaration of nationwide Martial Law and railroading of the Charter Change/Federalism to make sure that we would be able to effectively counter these devious duterte plans.
ALSO this:
I am in favor of VP Robredo leading and being a focal point of the opposition at the same time. Why? Because the opposition needs to unite under one acceptable and recognized leader and that is VP Leni Robredo.
He also said Leni was competent and has the mandate as VP.
2. CPD question
This one is admittedly tricky. The CPD requirements are seen as unnecessary and a needless burden for professionals.
Trillanes explains that this was not unnecessary, and is actually a requirement laid down by other ASEAN countries. Keep up with the requirements and you would not have any problems working your profession in other ASEAN countries. As well as making Filipino professionals more globally competitive.
Trillanes assured that help is on the way.
I totally sympathize with our professionals as they go through the growing pains of this new CPD law. My office has already conducted 3 public hearings to address some concerns and has been closely working with the PRC to make the CPD programs affordable and accessible to them. We have gained headway in providing free CPD programs for public school teachers and nurses as both the DepEd and DOH are mandated to be CPD providers. We were also able to reduce the required CPD units for certain professions. Moreover, we are pressing the PRC to provide online courses to do away with the costly sit-in programs.
3. Federalism
Trillanes says no to changing the form of government to Federalism.
I am against the proposed shift to Federalism as a form of government. As a student of public policy, I have studied the different forms of government, and I believe we have yet to properly operate the current Presidential-Unitary form of government that we have. But aside from this, I oppose federalism due to the following reasons:
  1. At present, we have no sense of nationalism. This might further worsen once we divide the country into federated states.
  2. Political warlordism will become more pronounced. Imagine the political dynasties ruling in our country today. Now, if federalism would be implemented, these dynasties and warlords would become more powerful and more untouchable since they would be the same ones who would rule these states. Just a thought, sinu-sino sa tingin nyo ang magiging governor ng bawat federated state?
  3. On the economic side, this would a burden to our countrymen. Because aside from the federal tax imposed by the National government, the federated states will impose state taxes in order to support its state government.
4. Same sex marriage and divorce law
Rather than making excuses and posturing, Trillanes went the honest route and told Redditors that he didn't know much about the issue to make an informed decision.
5. Don't lose hope.
thatmrphdude: What can you say to Filipinos that are just sick and tired of all the headlines showing nowadays. It's just depressing. I feel really hopeless for this country.
TrillanesSonny: Don't lose hope. The political tide is actually turning. Soon, matatapos din ang malagim na yugto na ito ng ating kasaysayan.
Also this:
The past two years have been difficult for our country but our people are beginning to see the light. We have gained a lot of headway and I can honestly say that we are now winning the war. As our history shows, ultimately, the goodness, decency, courage and collective wisdom of the Filipino people will prevail.
And this:
moonwlkr67: Good afternoon, Sen Trillanes. It's my first time to participate in an AMA in Reddit. Gusto ko pong magpasalamat for soldiering on during these trying times in democratic republic. Pangalawa po, gusto kong itanong kung ano ang sa tingin nyo ang magiging "tipping point" para manaig ang pagka-makabayan ng mga Filipino higit sa pagka-partisan. Salamat po, and more power! :)
TrillanesSonny: Salamat din sayo. The tipping point would probably be kapag nagdeclare si duterte ng nationwide Martial Law or Revgov or pagka sinagasa nila ang Charter Change/Federalism kahit hindi isama ang Senado.
6. What he'd change in the Constitution
anobaate: If you could change a part of the constitution what would it be?
TrillanesSonny: The removal of the provision subjecting the AFP officers with the Commission on Appointments. This practice has rendered these officers vulnerable to politicization by hostaging their confirmation. I would rather have only the most senior officials be subjected to the process of the CA.
7. On Duterte
aivpt: Will Duterte ever commit an act so despicable that even his supporters give up defending him? What do you think will this act be?
TrillanesSonny: I believe he has already committed several despicable acts that chipped away at his support base, such as: pagmura kay Pope, the EJKs, pag-impose ng high taxes, paghalik sa OFW in South Korea, anti-tambay directive, and his attacks on God and the Christian faith. Every duterte supporter has threshold that depends on his level of fanaticism. Some, as early as nung minura si Pope, humiwalay na. But the most na bawas na suporta sa kanya is with his anti-God statements. Those who are still with him by this time would probably not leave him until sila mismo ang mabiktima.
Also this:
TrillanesSonny: Duterte remaining as president is the most alarming issue. He is killing our people; mismanaging the economy; messing-up our foreign policy; destroying the moral fabric of our society; and he is destroying our democratic institutions.
8. On Boracay
The Boracay closure is totally unnecessary. The problems caused by the illegally-placed sewage lines can be fixed even without closing the island. Until now, the government has yet to present a comprehensive rehabilitation plan which showed their incompetence and unpreparedness for this abrupt closure. More importantly, this is totally unfair to the thousands of displaced workers in the island. Personally, I believe this is another classic duterte shakedown so his business interests are pursued and protected. Aside from the casinos, there are reports right now that duterte's davao group are land grabbing in boracay in the guise of demolition for having questionable ownership documents. This is similar to what he did to Ongpin's philweb and the mining sector

Other stuff

  • Case against Mocha is still pending with the Ombudsman. sThinking Penoy will be arraigned on August 15. Less than one month na lang, TP...
  • His sense of duty motivates himo to go to work, maski ang sakitsakit na....
  • He thinks Bong Go will run for senate despite his denials. And sadly, there is nothing we could do to get rid of his tarps and campaign materials. Pinagtawanan din nila si Bong Go nung hinamon siya magsaksakan ng ballpen.
  • He would still be an active member of the AFP if the Oakwood mutiny did not happen.
  • Regarding the Province of China tarps: "It's clearly a prank by some sectors opposing duterte's foreign policy as regards China. But I'm surprised by the negative reaction of the duterte admin about it when in fact it was duterte himself who said this on national tv."
  • On personal safety: "Thank you for your concern. No can really be safe nowadays but we do our best to provide for my physical security."
  • The people he trusts in government: VP Leni Robredo, Minority Senators Drilon, Pangilinan, Aquino, Hontiveros and De Lima, Sen. Grace Poe. Some of them ay nakilala ko on a personal level, some of them ay consistent at aligned doon sa mga ipinaglalaban ko.
  • He thinks that public support for Duterte has waned. "I don't normally read troll comments so I'm not that affected. But, we use the negative comments from legit netizens as a gauge for the social media pulse. And with this, I can actually say that Duterte's support in social media has waned drastically the past few months."
  • On why he sees himself as a fatalist: "There was this series of life-changing incidents that happened to me when I was 18 years old and a graduating student in DLSU. It made me believe in the primacy of God's will."
  • Corruption in the AFP has significantly decreased since 2003. However, lately, we have been getting complaints from AFP officers about corruption involving the modernization funds of AFP.
  • On the Lumad issue: I'll ask my staff to check on this. I am against the militarization of the Lumads in the same vein that i am against their infiltration by the NPAs. The Lumads should be allowed to live without any external influence.
  • On the Bonifacio Day ouster rumor (throow12: Few days before the Manila Pen, I heard of a rumor that a GMA ouster was brewing up and it will happen in Bonifacio day, a few weeks after your "walk-out" in court, I heard that your actions supposedly pre-empted that ouster. Do you have previous knowledge of that supposed Bonifacio day action and one of your primary reasons for the walkout?): That's not true. May mga nafa-fundraising lang na gagalaw kuno pero hindi naman. Kilala ko yung mga nagpe-peddle ng information na ganyan.

Literary Destiny: Primary Weapons!

Hey all, 30,000 words later, I've finished the rough draft of my thesis, so I get to reward myself with this!
It is an attempt to catch all the literary references in Destiny's flavor texts–I did armor last week, you can find that post here!
Obviously, since I'm not a writer in Destiny, nor do I know any of the writers, this will not 100% complete–but I read a lot, so maybe it'll be close!
Without more ado about nothing, here's the primary weapons! They're organized by class, and then roughly in descending order of rarity.

Auto Rifles

Fabian Strategy: Wait for enemy to make a mistake. Die. Stand by for Ghost Resurrection. Repeat as necessary.
Interestingly, despite its name being the an actual military strategy, the use of Fabian Strategy really doesn't seem in line with that strategy. The actual strategy is one of attrition, guerrilla warfare, and light skirmishes, as opposed to the frontline fighting the gun espouses. The strategy itself was named after Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator (can't make this stuff up), a Roman dictator who pioneered it against Hannibal, a legendary Carthaginian commander. Fun fact, his cognomen–or honorary last name–Verrucosus, means 'warty', a reference to a wart on his upper lip.
((GENESIS CHAIN~)): ~if(input(SIVA)) // echo Shirazi // output(death) // ask(not in vain)~
I think this is a reference to James 4:3:
3You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures.
New Revised Standard Version. 'Ask not in vain', as it were. I'm not 100% about this one simply because it's not a great fit, but 'ask not in vain' is a pretty iconic phrase.
Monte Carlo: There will always be paths to tread and methods to try. Roll with it.
Uhh, so this is a reference to the Monte Carlo method, which, according to Wikipedia, is, "a broad class of computational algorithms that rely on repeated random sampling to obtain numerical results." If someone with relevant expertise could explain this better, I'll edit it in, but for now, I'll take a whack at it: as a part of risk analysis, Monte Carlo methods allow you to simulate a large number of possible outcomes, so you can better make decisions under uncertainty. Of course, it is also a reference to the Monte Carlo principality in Monaco, particularly its opera-house-cum-casino, from which the RNG of the Monte Carlo method takes its name.
Abyss Defiant: We will not go quietly.
A reference to Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' "Do not go gentle into that good night", all of which is fabulous, but I will quote just a short stanza here:
Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
As Guardians, we're pretty conditioned against the 'dying of the light', so this one definitely feels like a good fit.
Arminius-D: Unleash a torrent on your enemies with the Häkke Arminius-D.
The name is of Arminus (german, Hermann), a legendary German commander who lived in both the BCE and CE, and gave the Romans their greatest defeat at the Battle of Teutonberg, in 9CE. Arguably one of the most important battles in history, it likely stopped Roman advancement past the Rhine permanently–which is likely the "torrent" referenced in the flavor text.
Zarinaea-D: You provide the will, and the Häkke Zarinaea-D provides the way.
A Sacae woman, who also fought in battles. Wife of the Parthian (ayyyyy, see pulse rifles, below) King Marmares. Her story is related in Ctesias' history of the Persian empire, Persica.
Paleocontact JPK-43: An auto rifle, modified by Dead Orbit's superb technicians and specialists.
Paleocontact is the idea that aliens rendezvoused with early humans and influenced civilization. It is generally considered a pseudo-historic theory at best, and falls under "Ancient astronauts". No idea about the "JPK-43" part, unfortunately.
Questing Beast: You'll never catch it. But that's not the point.
A reference to Arthurian legend, the Questing Beast is a vicious monster, and a, "... subject of quests undertaken by famous knights such as King Pellinore, Sir Palamedes, and Sir Percival". Its description was quite ferocious:
The strange creature has the head and neck of a snake, the body of a leopard, the haunches of a lion, and the feet of a hart.[1] Its name comes from the great noise that it emits from its belly, a barking like "thirty couple hounds questing". 'Glatisant' is related to the French word glapissant, 'yelping' or 'barking', especially of small dogs or foxes.
More contemporary incarnations can be found in The Magicians series by Lev Grossman, and possibly South Park? Unsurprisingly, it also makes an appearance in the Merlin TV series. Thanks to Phoenity1 for pointing that one out!
Zero-Day Dilemma: There's no defense against it.
A reference to zero-day vulnerabilities, which are computer vulnerabilities found and exploited before the developers can come up with a solution or workaround–thus the 'zero-day' moniker.
For The People: I stand against the state of nature.
A reference to Thomas Hobbes' "natural condition of mankind", from Leviathan. A 'state of nature' was the theoretical idea of man's existence before society. A really interesting exploration of that idea is Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān, a philosophical work by Ibn Tufail–Arabic, أبو بكر محمد بن عبد الملك بن محمد بن طفيل القيسي الأندلسي– which tells the story of a young man raised entirely in nature by animals, who only comes into contact with society later on in his life.
Izudabar-D: Millenia will pass, and still your name will ring out.
"Izdubar" was the initial translation of the name Gilgamesh, who of course is the protagonist of the Epic of Gilgamesh a fabulous (and surprisingly short!) ancient Mesopotamian epic poem, which is considered the first example of the genre.
Bronzed Miyamoto-D: An aggressive Häkke auto rifle, earned through glory in the Crucible.
A reference to the later-era (1600s) Japanese swordsman and strategist, Miyamoto Musashi–Japanese, 宮本 武蔵–and likely not the co-founder of Nintendo! In his later years, he wrote The Book of Five Rings, a treatise on strategy, tactics and philosophy.
Galahad-E: This extraordinary multirole rifle boasts a smartmatter frame, the key to remarkable capabilities.
More Arthurian legend! Sir Galahad is the illegitimate son of Lancelot and Elaine of Corbenic, ironically renowned for his purity and gallantry. He appeared quite late in the Medieval Arthurian legends, but became much more common in the later narratives, like Le Morte d'Arthur. Ultimately, he is considered to be the only night of Arthur's table worthy to see the Holy Grail and ascend to Heaven.
Shingen-E: The exemplary Shingen-E is built to pop skulls.
One of my old favorites (still sad I sharded it, though :( alas for small vaults), it likely references another 16th century feudal Japanese lord, Takeda Shingen–Japanese, 武田 信玄. A commander of "exceptional military prestige" during the Sengoku period, his alleged death by sniper was depicted by Kurosawa in the movie Kagemusha. It will be the 444th anniversary of his death on May 13th!
Longespée-A: When all around you is chaos, the dependable Longespée-A won't fail you.
A reference to William Longespée (literally, 'long sword' ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)), 3rd Earl of Salisbury. Renowned for being friggin' huge and having a friggin' huge sword. Go figure. He died in 1226, and was buried in Salisbury Cathedral. Five hundred and fifty years later, his tomb was opened, and a well-preserved rat was found inside his skull. I guess you could say it was skulking around? He got ratted out, though!
SUROS TYR-14: Stable. Dependable. Rapid-fire. SUROS.
Reminding me of how much I hate Suros' flavor text style, I'm not 100% sure about this one, because most of the 'cheap' Suros weapons have three-letter acronyms at the end of their name, so this might be coincidence. But, Týr is an ancient Germanic/Norse god, either the son of Odin, by the Prose Edda, or Hymar, by the Poetic Edda. Associated with war and might. Had his hand bit off by Fenrir, and is therefore known also known as 'The Leavings of the Wolf' which is an honorific, rather than a dig at him. His name is also where we get 'Tuesday' (Týr's-day)!
Cydonia-AR3: The City can't rely on a steady supply of programmable matter, so the multirole AR3 uses it only sparingly.
A region of Mars, but also a surname of Athena. That region of Mars was also where we found 'the Face of Mars', a rock formation whose shadows made it look like a face. Pretty neat.

Pulse Rifles

Herja-D: Devastate your foes with the deadly precision of the Häkke Herja-D.
More from the Prose Edda! This is a Valkyrie (demigoddesses of war, they would ride into battles and pick the worthy dead to come with them to Valhalla) specifically named in one of the two Nafnaþulur lists. Etymologically, it is also related to the Old Norse herja and Old High German herjón, both of which mean 'destruction' or 'devastation'.
Apple of Discord: "For the Fairest."
Huge shout-out to G3vanB, I'll put their analysis here:
Eris, godess of strife, supposedly throws one:
An apple of discord is a reference to the Golden Apple of Discord (Greek: μῆλον τῆς Ἔριδος) which, according to Greek mythology, the goddess Eris (Gr. Ἔρις, "Strife") tossed in the midst of the feast of the gods at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis as a prize of beauty, thus sparking a vanity-fueled dispute among Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite that eventually led to the Trojan War.
The Apple was inscribed with ΤΗΙ ΚΑΛΛΙΣΤΗΙ The translation is the Gun's flavour text.
Interesting to note the Goddess of Strife's name ...
Hawksaw: A northwesterly wind is blowing.
Perhaps one of the more well-known references to our dear Bard, this is from Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2, Line 351:
HAMLET I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw.
We're all mad, mad I tell you! Thanks to pocsaclypse for pointing that one out!
Parthian Shot: Who's got the last laugh now?
A military tactic turned literary term, a Parthian shot is an insult or retort delivered as the speaker was leaving. It eventually evolved into the much more well-known 'parting shot' in a delightful little bit of linguistic movement. It comes from a strategy developed by the Parthians, ancient Iranian peoples, where they would ride their horses away from the enemy while firing their bows at said enemy. Of course, it was also before the development of stirrups, so this was a technique that required a truly sublime mastery of equestrian skill. Imagine shooting a bow, while riding a horse, that you're only controlling with the muscles in your legs. Insane.
Smite of Merain (Adept): Barrel etching: "He parted them like a sea, which closed upon him again."
It's not exact, but any references to any parting of any seas are of course biblical in nature–Exodus, 14:21-15:19. Just taking the most similar quote I can find:
26 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chari- ot drivers."
14:26, NRSV. As usual, that particular act of God is followed with a great deal of praise.
The Messenger: From deep within the shadows it came—a messenger borne on black wings.
The personification of death often includes a pair of black wings. Crows and Ravens (and many other members of the Corvus family), often thought of as battlefield scavengers, are black. This feels like it should be a specific reference, but honestly it's more a trope than anything.
Hopscotch Pilgrim: It's a long road. Enjoy it.
In a seriously impressive bit of detective work, JohnnyFlack found that this is actually referencing:
Oh oh i found this while reading about the origins of hopscotch...
"In Cuba and in Puerto Rico it is called "La Peregrina" (meaning "Pilgrim Girl") and the squares represent the 9 rings the pilgrim traveler has to pass in order to reach Heaven from Purgatory according to Dante's Inferno."
Here's the Wikipedia article!
Moriaen-D: You are a child of many peoples, a protector of all cultures.
More Arthurian literature. This is a 13th century romance, called Moriaen, whose story of the titular hero follows him as he first attempts to find his father, and meets with famous knights of the round table, like Lancelot and Gawain. Once his father Aglovale is found, they return to his mother and take back her rightful lands. He is Moorish after his mother, but obviously is also a part of the Arthurian tradition. Thus the 'child of many cultures'.
Lump Distribution: This nimble rifle's on-board tactical systems keep a scrupulous tally of combat stats.
Besides looking totally neat, the gun refers to a Lump-Sum Distribution, which is, "... the distribution or payment within a single tax year of a plan participant's entire balance from all of the employer's qualified plans of one kind (for example, pension, profit-sharing, or stock bonus plans)." Thanks for that, IRS.
Painted Apollo MSc: A highly accurate Nadir firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
Our first Nadir gun! Apollo is the Greek god of, among other things, music, poetry, art, oracles, archery, plague, medicine, sun, light and knowledge. Wicked important, very well known. Has a sister, Artemis.
Painted Neptune MSc: A high velocity Nadir firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
I'm sensing a naming trend, though perhaps not a consistent! Neptune is the Roman god of the sea and freshwater, and is the counterpart to the Greek Poseidon.
Hotspur-A: Piezopolymer paneling makes the Häkke Hotspur-A a balanced war machine.
Hey! This is interesting. The green Häkke weapons are named after English noblemen! This one is after Henry 'Hotspur' Percy. Led a bunch of rebellions against Henry IV and was eventually killed at the Battle of Shrewsbury by an arrow to the face. Get rekt kiddo. He also featured as a character in Shakespeare's Henry IV, part I.

Scout Rifles

Fate of All Fools: *"The wise man knows his fate. The fool merely finds it."
I orignally thought this was a reference to Matthew, but turns out it's not–check out the story below!
A really excellent explanation of this from Voroxpete, which makes much more sense:
The Fate of All Fools - This one is actually a reference to a videogame... Specifically, Marathon, the series that Bungie created back in 1994, and from which many, many elements of both Halo and Destiny are derived. Rather apropo, given that the weapon was originally gifted to a long time fan who was recovering from brain cancer.
The specific reference is to this scene from Marathon 2:
Tycho's ship has been destroyed. The crater where it annihilated itself on Lh'owon's inner moon is still glowing. There were no survivors. With a focused message laser I burned his epitaph into the surface near the crash site, in letters three hundred meters high: "Fatum Iustum Stultorum."
The speaker in that scene is Durandal, an incredibly powerful rampant AI (wow, gee, its almost like Bungie have some kind of fixation on powerful rogue AIs or something). Tycho is another very powerful AI, acting under the control of an alien empire and sent to destroy or capture Durandal.
The phrase in latin at the end is a little bit wonky (hiring experts to get your dead languages right wasn't exactly a thing in nineties video game design), but it's more or less agreed that the intended translation is something like "The just fate of the foolish"...
Or "The fate of all fools."
Cocytus SR4: The Omolon Cocytus SR4 will drown your enemy in a river of pain.
Thanks to scapulargolem for this:
The 'Cocytus' is referencing the black river surrounding Dis/Hades (The underworld) in Classical mythology. It's mentioned many times in Virgil's Aeneid book 6. It's flavour text reflects this.
Incidentally, in some versions of the tale, the Cocytus Styx was supposedly the river Achilles was submerged in to make him invulnerable. He was held by his ankle, thus making his ankle his only weak spot–his Achilles heel (thanks to thyrandomninja for that clarification!).
And some additional context from Owasippe_Ninja! Thanks!
Awesome. Also, in Dante's Inferno, Cocytus is the frozen lake of the Ninth circle of hell, encasing not only Lucifer himself, but those who betray a bond of trust with others like benefactors, countrymen, and family. The ice is formed by the tears of the Old Man of Crete, which are described as being frozen sorrow and pain, and the frozen winds blown up by the wings of Lucifer. The worst betrayers (who aren't being devoured in the three heads of Lucifer) are fully encased in the ice in a the region called Judecca, named supposedly for Judas Iscariot (although there's more to Judecca than just Judas, check out its use in medieval city planning and general attitudes of Italian Christians of the time to Jews). So seems to fit the flavor text of "drowning enemies in a river of pain."
Additional small bit from another stealthy person, thyrandomninja:
is not just a reference to a literal river, but the Cocytus is also the river of lamentation, or mournful woe. It not only drowns the enemy in front of you by shooting them, but their friends and family are drowned in mourning as well.
Tuonela SR4: Hell will freeze over before the Omolon Tuonela SR4 will fail you.
Ahahah funny joke, Bungo. In Finnish mythology, Tuonela is the equivalent of Hades. In Finnish Christianity, it is the word used for 'Hell' in translations of the Bible. In terms of a literary reference, though, Tuonela is featured in the Kalevela, a Finnish national epic. The protagonist (roughly speaking), Väinämöinen, travels there to seek the knowledge of the dead. It, uhh, went okay.
The Hero Formula: It's just so satisfying!
Okay, this is referencing one of two things: either Heron's formula, alternately spelled Hero's formula; or the Hero's journey, which, frankly, makes slightly more sense? The first is a mathematical formula that gives the area of a triangle by requiring no arbitrary choice of side as base or vertex as origin, where A=√(s-(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)). It's satisfying, I guess? Math isn't really my thing. The second refers to the 'monomyth' or the "common template of a broad category of tales that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed". The idea was originally put forward by Jason Joseph Campbell in his 1949 book on the subject, The Hero With a Thousand Faces.
Lethe Noblesse: Do not forget. Never forgive.
Many thanks to Johnny_Dirtbird for this one:
Good job. One other that I had in mind is the Queen's scout rifle, Lethe Noblesse. The flavor text is "Do not forget. Never forgive." From - Lethe is "a river in Hades whose water caused forgetfulness of the past in those who drank of it." Noblesse is a French word that means nobility. I know it from the phrase 'Noblesse Oblige' - nobility obligates. Putting the words together, my guess would be something like 'forgetfulness of nobility.'
High Road Soldier: The survival of civilization depends on our willingness to choose conscience over expedience.
Per S0rrowS0ng and JohnnyFlack, this is likely a reference to the common idiom (I mean, it bascially defines the concept in the flavor text) 'take the high road'. It could also be a winking reference to the chorus 'The Bonnie Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond':
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road, And I'll be in Scottland a'fore ye, But me and my true love will never meet again, On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
Zero Point LOTP: This much fun should be outlawed.
thyrandomninja has a great and funny explanation:
I'll do what I can to explain. Every object has "energy levels", whether it be an electron, a molecule, a snooker ball, or a planet. The DIFFERENCE between these energy levels is imperceptible to us because we exist on the macroscopic scale (i.e. we're too big to see tiny differences), so to us it looks continuous. On the microscopic level (e.g. electrons, these energy levels are relatively larger, and much more noticeable, which is what ultimately leads to all the "weird shit" in quantum mechanics, that doesn't show up in real life scenarios). Energy states are usually categorised as n=1, n=2, etc, where n is the number of that energy level. (Electrons NATURALLY tend to operate in n=1 through ~20 [give or take whatever - CERN like to add a few thousand/million/whatever n's in their accelerators :P ] territory, whereas a person is always on n = several fucking million) Zero Point Energy is the energy of an object at n=1. There is no n=0 (for reasons i won't get into here), and therefore no such thing as "having no energy". There is always SOME amount of energy in any given object, and you cannot get rid of it (that "some amount" is negligible compared to things we see in our lives, but that's not the point).
Relating to Life Of The Party, this is probably saying there's no such thing as a dead party. There is always SOME fun to be had, no matter what - the very idea a "life of the party" person would embody.
Alternatively, it could be a jab at the "life of the party" philosophy, by saying that "yeah, there's some fun, but it's negligible, and i'm going to go home", meaning the description takes on a more sarcastic approach.
The Scholar: You can't pull an all-nighter when the sun never sets.
Not really 'literature', but too relevant not to include ;)
Also, per goldenboot76:
Everyone probably knows this already, but the other reasoning behind the Scholar scout rifle's flavour text is the fact that Mercury's orbital period and rotational period are one and the same. As such, half of Mercury is in eternal sunlight, and the other is in eternal darkness.
Hence, the "You can't pull an all-nighter when the sun never sets.".
Thanks for that!
Lampad SR4: Let your enemies know: death will be their only companion.
The Lampads, or Lampedes, were spirits of the underworld in greek mythology. They accompanied Hecate and generally went around doing spooky stuff.
Orphne SR4: If death is the Darkness's way, let our Light defy their desire.
Orphne was a specific nymph of the Greek underworld. Also an alternate translation of Caliga, the goddess of Darkness.
Painted Abbadon SR5: A single-fire Omolon firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
Sharing its name with the exotic machine gun, Abbadon is either a "place of destruction" or an Angel of Death. Either way, not pleasant.
Just a quick clarification from westen81, thanks!
Abbadon is most usually associated with the angel of destruction (not necessarily death)..
Painted Sorg SR5: A powerful Omolon firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
In a large number of Germanic and Germanic-derived languages, 'sorg' means 'sorrow' or 'grieving'.
Primed Díyú SR5: A long range Omolon firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
Following a clear pattern here, 'Diyu' is the Chinese conception of Hell.
Silvered Kín SR5: A highly accurate Omolon firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
A Turkic word, it means, simply, 'pain'.
Bronzed Yamaduta SR5: An accurized Omolon Scout Rifle, earned through glory in the Crucible.
The Yamatuda are messengers of Death in the Hindu tradition.
Thanatos SR5: Where Death follows, new life will grow. Where new life grows... Death will follow.
Thanatos is the Greek personification of Death. He is the twin brother of Hypnos, the God of Sleep. Referenced in the Illiad:
... then send Death to carry him away, and Sleep who is painless ...
The Iliad, 16.453-4. Richard Lattimore, translator.
Xibalba SR5: Tiled with picocircuitry, the Xibalba SR5 is fiendishly accurate and hungry to grow.
How many different conceptions of Hell can we find? This particular one refers to the Mayan realm of the dead. It shares its flavor text with the Acheron SR5. The Acheron is both a real river in Greece, but also another one of the five rivers of Hades. The Cocytus (discussed above) flows into it.
Naraka SR5: There will always be new hells to conquer.
hahah, no kidding about those 'new hells'. This specific hell is a particularly diverse amalgamate, finding its place in Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. Modified to 'Neraka' in Indonesian and Malaysian, it also describes the Islamic concept of hell. Moreover, it also describes the servants and spirits of Hell when modified to 'Narakas'.
Garmr SR1: Death is hungry.
Garmr is a dog (or wolf) of the Underworld in Norse mythology. He is, "the blood-stained guardian of Hel's gate".
Shinigami SR1: Death comes for the City's foes. Let's not keep it waiting.
Shinigami–Japanese, 死神–are spirits or gods of death. They invite humans to death, and rule over the underworld. Fans of the anime Death Note will also remember their appearance in that series.

Hand Cannons

The Last Word: "Yours. Not mine." —Renegade Hunter Shin Malphur to Dredgen Yor
Many thanks to andreisse for this one!
I know it's based on a gun, and a speech... I'll try and find it.
The Last Word is likely based on a real-life counterpart called Revolver No. 5. It was a weapon devised in 1928 by Elmer Keith, a "firearms enthusiast" from Idaho renowned for his six-shot expertise. He wrote about this weapon in 1929, in an article titled "The Last Word".
Here's a link to a .pdf of the article.
Gaheris-D: Balanced and dependable, the Häkke Gaheris-D is a true warrior's weapon.
More Arthurian legends! Gaheris was the nephew of Arthur, and a knight of the round table. He is described as "... valiant, agile, handsome, reticent in speech, prone to excess when angered, and possessing a right arm longer than the left".
Judith-D: Headshots are strongly encouraged with the Häkke Judith-D.
So, there are a lot of things this could be, but most likely it is referencing Judith of Bethulia, an Israelite who beheaded the Assyrian general Holofernes. Headshots strongly encouraged, indeed! Incidentally, that poem is found in the same manuscript as Beowulf–the Nowell Codex.
Kumakatok HC4: When the Omolon Kumakatok HC4 comes knocking, even the Darkness locks its doors.
The kumakatok are three Philippine spirits, who walk from door to door, knocking and bringing bad omens. One is supposed to resemble a young woman, the other two old men–however, they obscure their faces with hoods. Seriously creepy.
The Devil You Know: Let's make a deal ...
A reference to the phrase, "Better the devil you know than the devil you don't", this is the only weapon I know of that actually completes the phrase in game. The Devil You Don't was widely acknowledged to be simply a worse version of TDYK, not only being an impact class lower, but also with worse base range. That's commitment to the joke right there.
Uffern HC4: Omolon's Uffern HC4 sentences the City's enemies to burn.
In what should be a surprise to nobody at this point, Uffern is the Celtic version of Hell. Unfortunately I can't source it beyond a three-word mention in the Wikipedia article on Hell.
A very helpful clarification by Rapstah–much appreciated!
"Uffern" is literally Welsh for "hell". "U" is a near-close central unrounded vowel, or even a short "i" sound in southern Welsh. The sound "f" is represented as "ff" in Welsh, so if you represent it as "yfern" it's clear that it's derived from Latin "infernus".
I wouldn't say it's the Celtic version of Hell, it's literally just what you would call the christian concept of Hell in Welsh.
Byronic Hero: Brood, baby, brood.
A type of anti-hero created and embodied by Lord Byron. Byronic Heroes are: "a man proud, moody, cynical, with defiance on his brow, and misery in his heart, a scorner of his kind, implacable in revenge, yet capable of deep and strong affection". Think Hamlet, with a touch of Han Solo.
Also possibly another more modern reference, per getedm8–thanks!
This may be a stretch, but with the Byronic Hero's flavor text, it could be a reference to Saturday Night Fever. More specifically, the song "Disco Inferno" where the main chorus sings "Burn, baby burn!"
Vortimer-D: Where you come from is not important. It's for what you do that you will be remembered.
Vortimer, or Saint Vortimer, was another English legend. He can be found in Geoffry of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britainniae–my copy of which I've misplaced, apologies–where he is a described as a Britonic king with a strong distaste for Saxons. Worked out well, he died though.
Rience-D: You will not suffer these invader kings to live.
Hey, wait, are you telling me Häkke named another one of their guns after an English legend?! Yes, yes I am: Rience was an English/Irish/Scottish/British king named in Arthurian legend. He is variously described as the king of North Wales, Ireland, and 'many Isles'. He had the habit of edging his robe with the beards of Kings he had conquered–by the time Arthur came along, he had eleven. Arthur's, of course, was to be the twelfth invader king that he would crush. Didn't work out so well. Gosh, I really hope that's not a predictor.
LOCK_ARETE: Her excellence lies in swiftness.
A confusing one, because arete-Greek, ἀρετή–is literally 'excellence', especially in regards to efficacy, but also in terms of bravery. Arete is also the wife of Alcinous of Scheria, described thus in the Odyssey:
... Alkínoös married her and hold her dear. No lady in the world, no other mistress of a man's household, is honored as our mistress is, and loved, by her own children, by Alkínoös, and by the people. When she walks the town they murmur and gaze, as though she were a goddess. No grace or wisdom fails in her; indeed just men quarrels come to her for equity ...
The Odyssey, 7.70-8. Robert Fitzgerald, translator.
It wasn't originally my plan for these to go in descending order of references, but hey, that worked out nicely!
As I said in the beginning, I'm sure I've missed some, so don't hesitate to point them out.
Thanks so much for reading, Guardians, I really appreciate it!

Ok, I have my own theory of the crime

Paddock has met a new, younger woman who he's been having an affair with. What he doesn't know is she's a honey pot federal operative. As their relationship grows, she asks him to take her to Vegas on his next big gambling trip. He agrees. In a coincidence that is anything but, Paddock gets an email from Mandalay Bay offering him the big high rollers suite for an entire week, (9/25-10/1).1 He seizes the opportunity and sends his girlfriend to the Philippines. 2
Reservations are also made in his name at hotels overlooking concerts around the country and in LV the week earlier.3
They check in and things go so well Paddock wires his girlfriend $100,000 to buy a house in the Philippines, a gesture she interprets as his way of breaking up with her. 2 Paddock is seen around the casino with the honey pot agent. 4
That same employee who set up the suite and is in on the plot, books the adjoining room under Paddock's name on the 28th, unbeknownst to Paddock. 5 6
In that adjoining room, suitcases of guns stolen from Paddock's home are wheeled in over several days.7 Paddock has no idea and does not have a key to that room, nor does he have access through the inside door. Also rolled in are belt-fed longer range weapons that are better able to hit concert goers from such a long distance and fire more rounds than anything stolen from Paddock's home ever could.8 Several of Paddock's rifles are modified with bump stocks to help explain the discrepancy.9
Sunday afternoon, the honey pot asks to borrow Paddock's SUV to go run an errand. He gives her the keys and his gfs valet card. She takes the SUV to a warehouse to have it filled with various types of legal but lethal explosives.10 She returns the SUV to the garage10b, but Paddock will never see her again. She, however, has forgotten her cell phone charger in the suite. 11
Sunday evening, the real shooter(s) is/are in position in the adjoining room ready to start the operation. He or another team have earlier entered Paddock's suite while he is at the video poker machines and began moving in Paddock's guns from the adjoining room and start generally setting up the crime scene.
Everything is in place except one thing: Paddock isn't in his suite, he's still paying video poker. He's had a good week, even if he's starting to wonder where the new love of his life has disappeared to.
This isn't a problem. Paddock was to be lured away from the room and lured back at the right time by a few different scenarios. They can't use the honey pot anymore because Paddock has to be alone in the suite, and he can't be seen to be with anyone this close to zero hour.
They have Jesus Campos their security guard whose in on it (This is just a theory, if you're reading this Jesus) to approach Paddock at the video poker machine and ask him if he's in 32135. He says he is and Jesus tells him he just got a door alarm from his suite and after investigating he thinks there might have been a break in in his room. He asks Paddock to follow him up there and determine if anything's missing.
They take the elevator up to 32nd floor. As they enter the suite Paddock is subdued and murdered and placed in position to make it look like suicide. Gloves are put on his hands to avoid any lack of fingerprints on the weapons.
The shooting begins from the adjoining room with the carefully setup heavy artillery. Campos is in the adjoining room with the operators, monitoring the hallway via gopros on the room service cart. Anytime a guest pokes their head out, he tells them to get back inside, giving the impression the situation is being responded to. His ultimate job is to kill any would-be citizen hero who might take it upon themselves to try to stop the shooting. They know the SWAT team will take at least 10-15 minutes to respond.
Once SWAT is close to coming up on the elevator, which was shut off for safety and must be specially started again for SWAT, and the team in the stairwell is close to breaking through the obstruction placed on the 32nd floor stairwell door, Campos fakes a leg wound and the operaters spray the hallway through the suite doors. They then break a window in the suite, before they disappear into other rooms as guests.
SWAT shows up and Campos directs them to 32135. He tells them he was responding to the suite door alarm going off when he was sprayed with bullets. He claims to have been unaware of the massive shooting taking place from the widow.12 SWAT enters into a barricade mode.13 This had been expected by the operators. Campos insists on sticking around to help evacuate the floor.14 Conveniently, he starts with the room the operators are in, now disguised as guests. After a while the SWAT incredulously asks him if he shouldn't be seeking medical attention, to which he agrees and and leaves.15
Eventually SWAT blow open the door but Paddock is dead. Before SWAT can relax, the adjoining room must be checked out, but the operators locked it from both sides before disappearing. SWAT blow out the connecting door16 but inside they find only what appears to be a more thought out snipers nest than in the suite complete with better broken window, but no weapons, and no other people.
Many of the crime scene photos from the suite are leaked to the press just to put a graphic bow on the Lone Shooter narrative in the public's mind.17 However, the public just isn't buying it.18
